Emergency evacuation plans for apartment owners

30 Jan 2015

For the first time ever, apartment owners are being asked whether their building has an evacuation plan and would they know what to do in an emergency? Having an emergency evacuation plan in residential strata is not compulsory but Strata Management companies are encouraging owners corporations to voluntarily draft a plan and practice evacuations with residents.

Group CEO, Greg Haywood said past bushfires and floods in New South Wales provide a timely reminder for everyone living in apartments to ensure their building has an emergency evacuation plan in place.

"We want owner/occupiers and tenants to take the time to get to know the safest way to evacuate their building in case of an emergency," Mr Haywood said.

"While it's not compulsory in residential strata, there is no reason why the owners corporation could not create its own plan and undertake mock exercises with residents. That way they can assess who may need help and what can be done to provide that assistance."

"Residents should know how to access the fire escape, where to gather so they are not in the way of emergency services and how they would account for their neighbours."

Fire and Rescue NSW has a service that can assist produce plans for business and industry and it may be worth asking if they would also work with a strata scheme.

"Don't forget there may be elderly people or families with small children who may need extra assistance in an emergency. So get to know your neighbours and make sure they are able to evacuate their homes safely," Mr Haywood advised.

"Knowing what to do in an emergency and being able to help those who are less mobile surely will save a life at some stage."
